When we hear the name Frankenstein, this is the image that usually springs to mind. Green, squarish head, bolts in neck... While this could have been how Mary Shelley envisioned her creature when she wrote his story, the person actually named Frankenstein was the scientist who created the creature: Dr. Victor Frankenstein. There begin the twists in what we think we know about this book.
Born out of a convergence of a volcano in Indonesia, a gloomy summer in Switzerland and a contest between brilliant, bohemian writers, Frankenstein remains a cultural touchstone and a tale that has never lost its relevance.
I am recommending Frankenstein, The Modern Promethius as our October book, one, because it is Halloween, but two, because, with the birth of AI, it is increasingly important that we consider how much we want the creations of our own hands to control our lives. Frankenstein spoke to that question over 100 years ago.
If you are interested in diving deeper into understanding the author of Frankenstein, I also recommend another book in the MHS library, Mary’s Monster: Love, Madness and How Mary Shelley Created FRANKENSEIN. This book is a fascinating, quick read about the wild and dramatic life of a woman who created one of the world’s most famous monsters.

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusac
Each year I choose one book or author to recommend to the whole MHS community as a book that is worth reading and discussing. This year I am happy to direct you towards one of my all-time favorites, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusac.
I could describe this book simply as another WWII story to add to the cannon of great WWII stories, but it is more than that. This book has a spirit, I don’t know how else to describe it. It is a story about goodness in the face of insurmountable odds that has a life of its own. I have listened to many interviews with the author of The Book Thief and even he sounds a bit astonished at how this book came into being. It seems like this is a story that was meant to be in this world and Marcus Zusac got to be lucky enough to write it.
Here is what reviewers have said about The Book Thief:

I will say, this is a book where the reader has to just go with it for a few chapters before the story really starts rolling. Death is a character and the narrator of this tale, and he has his own way of describing what he is witnessing - it takes a minute to get the hang of his voice.
I am so excited for those who will be reading this book for the first time, and happy for the rest of us to return to it like an old friend. Read it. Enjoy it. Get some tissues for the ending and come and talk to me when you are done.

Whether you're a new or returning Mountain High family, attendance at one of these meetings are required in order to begin classes at Mountain High School. In this Meeting you will:

No School Monday, June 15 for Juneteenth. That will be a 3-day week. Last day is June 25. Edgenuity questions and support will need to be directed to the school you are enrolled in after that date.
